In plastic surgery, Botox is used for two primary purposes – cosmetic or excessive sweating.

Botox can be used cosmetically to improve wrinkles. It is a simple, nonsurgical procedure that can be done in the clinic and usually takes 10 minutes. It can be injected in your frown line between the brows, in your forehead or in your crow’s feet. During treatment, very low doses of Botox Cosmetic are injected via a tiny needle directly into the muscles. Discomfort during the injection is minimal You may have minimal redness at the injection points but this will disappear shortly after your injection. You may return to work the same day. You can expect to see your results within 5 days after your injection. Botox Cosmetic is not a permanent result. Injections will need to be done every 4-6 months to maintain your results. Botox Cosmetic is not considered medically necessary and is not covered by your insurance.

Botox is also FDA approved for severe underarm sweating (hyperhydrosis) when topical agents don’t work. Botox temporarily blocks the nerves and the chemical signals that stimulate the sweat glands causing the excessive sweating to stop. This procedure is done in the clinic and usually takes thirty minutes. You may return to work the same day. The botox is injected multiple times into your underarms through a very fine needle. Discomfort is minimal. You should notice a significant reduction in your underarm sweating within the first 4 weeks. This is not a permanent result. Injections will need to be done every 6 months to control your symptoms. Botox has also been used to control excessive sweating in the palms and feet as well.

Your insurance may cover botox injections for hyperhydrosis of your underarms. Insurance companies require that conservative measures at controlling your excessive sweating be attempted prior to botox treatment.
